The services in highest demand by today’s customers generally require advanced network capabilities beyond those of traditional circuit-switched networks, which lack the flexibility for rapid, cost-effective application development and fast time to market. However, the investment in existing infrastructure is high, making the decision to invest in new IP-based network technology difficult. Having many of these same concerns, TeliaSonera contracts with Stratus to design and build a server-based solution that sits above the network’s circuit-switched layer, in lieu of the expensive and time-consuming alternative of replacing the existing switching layer altogether.
Stratus leads a multi-vendor project team to develop and support an integrated solution, establish a test facility to pilot the system, and provide training for the carrier’s personnel. With partners, Stratus develops the software applications and middleware needed for the advanced voice and data services. The hardware foundation consists of five NEBS Level 3-certified servers running the Linux operating system and SINAP (Stratus Integrated Network Applications Platform) carrier-grade signaling software. The Stratus ftServer T30 fault-tolerant servers used in the solution are designed especially for availability requirements of telecommunications service providers.
TeliaSonera is now able to offer business and residential customers new products and services in days or weeks, instead of months or years, which helps retain existing customers and attract new ones.
